Managers, I have a few things for you in this August Chairman's Notes.
As you all know, we are very cautious about the weather, especially during the hurricane season, which we are in right now. We are going to cancel any tournament in which our members lives may be at risk. This is our policy and that will not change. We cancelled the Vero Area Tournament because there was bad weather in the days leading up to the tournament, and the possibility and stormy weather on the weekend. To save you money we always cancel by noon on Thursday so you can cancel your Hotel reservations by 4pm on Thursday afternoon. Lastly, the weather report had Vero right in the middle of the Tropical Storm. That did not happen and Vero had very little rain. A few would say we were dead wrong. I say we were right, and that Vero was fortunate and blessed in that they did not have a terrible storm and damage and floods, which did occur just to the south in the Miami/Palm Beach area. 'Nuff said about that.
We are already in late August, and some deadlines are right around the corner.
- October 1st - All Rosters must be completed and sent in to Greg Hazel.
- November 1st - If you have someone who needs a 'medical waiver' to play in the December Tournament, we need documentation. Contact Mike Knowles or Hal Hatley about this.
Concentrate on your website roster to see which Players are either eligible or not to play in the December Tournament. Check the By-Laws for eligibility.
I was inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame on July 25 in Lincoln, Nebraska. My wife Sherry and I had a great trip, and we thank the Florida Athletic Coaches Association for nominating me. Without their nomination, I could not have achieved that great honor. I was a high school coach for some 41 years, and I coached football, baseball, golf, track, and Jr. High basketball. I am truly a blessed man. Through the grace of God, and a great wife of 51 years, I never felt I went to work. I truly loved the classroom as a Social Science teacher, and the athletic fields, and I never felt that I had to get up and go to work. I did not look at my career as work but as a labor of love.
